Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) She was raised by the mother, her grandmother and her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. She suffered from an anxiety disorder caused by words as a young toddler. Ford was interested in the field of acting during her teens and became a member of the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for brief time but Ford realized it was not the right venue for her. Ford rather than applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot after her third try made an application and secured an admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall - who later was the character Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among her fellow students. Ford received her degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut, appearing in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1990. Ford took the professional name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly as well as London's Burning in the Nineties. Tate also performed regularly at the theater, ultimately being a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy, which she began adding to her show in the year 1996, was soon gaining her admiration.
